How to Wash Muslin Fabric

Muslin is a loosely woven, lightweight cotton. That structure is what makes it breathable and soft — and also what makes it shrink and thin out quickly if washed the wrong way. The good news: the right method is short and simple.

Washing: use 30 °C or cooler on a delicate cycle. Keep the spin speed between 600 and 800 rpm; a high spin sets permanent creases into muslin. Wash coloured pieces separately for the first few washes.

Detergent: a mild liquid detergent is enough. Avoid bleach and optical brighteners — they weaken the fibres. You do not need fabric softener either; muslin softens on its own with every wash, and softener only reduces its absorbency.

Drying: skip the tumble dryer. Shake the piece out as soon as it comes out of the machine, hang it up, and dry it somewhere airy but out of direct sunlight. Drying in the shade prevents both shrinkage and fading.

Ironing: the light crinkle of muslin is part of its character, not a flaw. If you do want to smooth it, iron it while slightly damp on a low setting, ideally inside out. A steam iron or a handheld steamer is the easiest route.

Storage: if you are putting pieces away for a season, fold them into a breathable cotton bag; a plastic bag traps moisture and causes yellowing.
